Description

North Trinity House, located at 114-116 Trinity Road, Edinburgh, was designed in 1858 by John Dick Peddie and Charles George Hood Kinnear. Originally a two-storey asymmetrical house with multiple gables, it is now subdivided. The house is constructed of squared and snecked reddish sandstone with ashlar dressings, incorporating a battered string course that separates the floors. Window reveals are chamfered, and the eaves overhang with bracketed detail; the gables are adorned with bargeboards.

The south elevation is five bays wide. A prominent gabled entrance bay is centrally positioned, featuring a timber boarded door within a deeply recessed arched surround with stop-chamfered details. A hoodmoulded carved heraldic panel and a carved date inscription panel (1858) are visible in the gablehead above the entrance. To the left is a narrow bay with a stone-mullioned bipartite window at ground level. A corbelled out gablehead features a two-light window with cusped timber tracery and colonnette mullions within a round-arched opening on the first floor. A lower gabled bay to the right has a ground floor window and a wallhead dormer breaking the eaves. Further gabled bays project to the left and right.

The east elevation includes a modern conservatory extension at ground floor.

On the north elevation, a slightly advanced gabled bay to the left incorporates a stone-mullioned two-light window at ground level and a further single window in the gablehead. The penultimate bay to the left has a narrow window at ground floor and a modern porch extension. Two gabled windows break the eaves above. An advanced three-bay section is positioned to the right, with a two-storey canted bay to the left which is scoop-corbelled at the first floor and sweeps to a square in the gablehead. A hoodmoulded blank heraldic panel is set into the gablehead. A gabled bay on the return side features a relatively recent oval window at ground level, a stone-mullioned two-light window at first floor, and a carved motif in the gablehead. A bipartite window is present on each floor in the final bay, with the first floor window projecting through the gable dormer.

The windows are predominantly plate glass set within timber sash and case frames. The roof is covered with grey slates. Square section corniced stacks with decorative square section cans punctuate the ridges.

Red sandstone ashlar gatepiers, featuring projecting bases and platformed pyramidal caps, mark the entrance. A stone-coped coursed rubble boundary wall encloses the property.
