Description

Lochee Station, built by Sir James Gowans in 1860-1861, is a single-storey, six-bay station building notable for its striking polychrome cyclopean rubble construction, featuring rough-hewn band courses.

On the north elevation, there is a blind basement due to the raised track level, which is highlighted by a series of rough-hewn band courses at two-foot intervals. Vertical strips at each corner create a square grid pattern. The elevation includes six shouldered arched windows and one bipartite window, all with blocked architraves and band courses at the cill and lintel levels. The eaves are supported by brackets.

The end elevations display similar stonework, band courses, and grid patterns, with bracketted eaves on the gables. The east gable is blind and has a modern stair adjoining it, while the west gable features a doorway with a modern door and a window that has been altered to a door, which is now blocked. This area is accessed by steps clad in cyclopean masonry, complemented by wrought-iron railings.

The south elevation, which originally faced the platform, has been altered to accommodate a modern extension. The slate roof has a serrated ridge, and while the off-centre stack or stacks are missing, they likely had banding with gablets.
