Description
St Margaret's Church, located at 17 Ancrum Road in Dundee, was designed by Reverend E. Sugden and completed in 1888. This cruciform-plan church features an apsidal chancel, transepts, and an unfinished nave.
The elevation facing Ancrum Road is partially obscured by a later hall built in 1921. It includes a small square two-stage tower that is harled, except for a roll-moulded opening. The church has a swept prismatic slate roof. The south end of the nave is also harled and features a wide segmental-arched opening on the ground floor, which is bipartite. The piended roof extends to provide shelter for the bell.
The transepts and chancel are constructed of low hammer-dressed rubble walls and have small-paned windows. They are topped with prismatic roofs and a continuous clerestory adorned with cusped timber tracery. The slate roofs of the chancel and transepts are finished with wrought-iron finials.
Inside, the church boasts a radial braced crown-post roof supported by timber posts. A delicate wrought-iron chancel screen separates the chancel from the nave. There is a circular Baroque carved timber pulpit from the 18th century, which is of German origin, along with a marble and alabaster altar. The painted reredos behind the altar is now whitewashed but is framed in carved timber and flanks traceried sedilia. An angel baptismal font from Italy is also present. The nave is short and has continuous clerestory lights, some of which feature simple stained glass.
