Description

Powrie Castle is a fortified house dating to 1604, with subsequent alterations. It is rectangular in plan, featuring a round tower to the northwest and an entrance tower to the south. The building is constructed of pink and buff rubble sandstone, with a stone slate roof; the entrance tower has a piended roof, while the round tower has a conical roof. The exterior displays roughly hewn quoins, chamfered margins and reveals, some weathered Renaissance detailing at the porch, and stained timber window frames with solid casements at the bottom (leaded lattice-glazed casements inside), fixed leaded glazing at the top. Later additions include finialled gable dormerheaded windows. A moulded wallhead course is present on the round tower, along with flat coped skews. The castle features substantial gable stacks with chamfered coping (thackstane at the west), and two shouldered wallhead stacks to the north.

The south elevation features a two-storey, rectangular-plan former entrance tower, located three bays from the left. It contains a window at the first floor with remnants of turned architraves, an entrance to a store at ground floor on the right return with a relieving arch, a corbelled first floor with a window and weathered, pilastered architraves, another entrance to the store at ground floor on the right return, a blocked former entrance at first floor with a moulded doorcase. Two bays define the left side of the main elevation with a ground floor door to the right and two first-floor windows. The right side of the main elevation showcases a bipartite and single window, two doors, a bipartite window (each with relieving arches), a narrow window, and three first-floor windows with sculpted lintels. A blocked doorway is located to the right, and glazed arrow slit windows are situated to the right of the central window and at the outer right.

The east gable appears plain, but shows evidence of buildings that once abutted it, and suggests the possible presence of a further opening. A small first-floor window is present to the right of a slightly advanced bay.

The north elevation incorporates a slop stone drain at ground floor level on the left, two small windows at the center, and an arrow slit window at first floor level on the right. Two substantial, off-set wallhead stacks are also present.

The west gable contains a round tower to the left, displaying three windows with small shot-holes located below, at first floor level, regularly spaced. An arrow slit window and a modern, out-of-character rooflight are visible on the left return. A bipartite window is located at ground floor level on the main elevation to the right, with a first-floor window that was formerly surmounted by a pedimented lintel.

The interior includes a barrel-vaulted room with a bread oven at the base of the round tower, a newel staircase, and a former kitchen with a massive segmental-arched chimneypiece and a beamed ceiling. First-floor rooms feature barrel vaulted timber ceilings and plain stone chimneypieces.
