Description

31 Albert Square in Dundee is a former Prudential Assurance building designed by Alfred and Paul Waterhouse between 1895 and 1898. This three-storey and attic structure is built of red brick with red ashlar dressings and bandings, featuring a polished granite base course and a plain red tile roof adorned with decorative terracotta ridge tiles.

The tall ground floor showcases Ionic pilastered outer bays that support a corniced frieze. There are cartouche panels flanked by palm leaves between the lintel course at the first floor and the cill course at the second floor, along with a corbelled main cornice at the second floor. The first and second floors have single and bipartite windows with 2-pane timber sash and case frames, and the bipartite windows are flanked by pilaster strips that rise through both floors to the cornice. The outer bays feature two gabled dormers with birdcage finials, as well as large round-headed windows with finialled pilasters. A small gabled dormer is located at the centre, linked to the outer gables by a coped arcaded parapet. The return gables are ashlar-coped with cut-down stacks. The cast-iron rainwater goods are rectangular-section at the front, with hoppers inscribed with 'PAC'.

On the front elevation, there is a tripartite window at the centre of the ground floor with a consoled fascia, along with four mezzanine windows above. The outer bay on the right features a round-headed pend entrance, while the left outer bay has a door with a tripartite round-headed window above it. The centre has a bipartite window flanked by single windows at both the first and second floors, with bipartite windows in the advanced outer bays. The elevation also includes three dormers.

The right return and rear elevations consist of single and paired windows. Inside, the ground floor public areas are finished with glazed tiles.
