Description
71 New Street is a building constructed between 1897 and 1898, designed by architect Alfred Waterhouse. It features red brick and moulded terracotta with a pink marble plinth and a pitched slate roof. The building stands three storeys tall with an attic and has a moulded stringcourse above the ground floor, as well as a moulded eaves cornice.
On the south side, large gabled bays project slightly, and there is a small gabled bay on the west side above the doorway. The ground floor has been modernized, except for the east bay of the south front, which includes one arched window with a moulded surround, and the north bay of the west front, which contains a doorway. This doorway is made of pink marble up to the impost level and features paired columns supporting a moulded pointed arch with a gable above. The door itself has a traceried fanlight and a moulded transom displaying "Prudential Assurance" in good contemporary lettering.
All windows are casements with mullions and transoms, while the windows in the gables have only mullions. The windows are set in moulded oblong frames, with the windows in the two large gables having moulded round-arched frames. Some windows are vertically linked with panelled zones in between. The west front includes a statue in a canopied niche, which was once set on a buttress, and the south front displays "Prudential Assurance Buildings" in good contemporary lettering.
