Description
Nos 4 and 6 on High Street are mid-19th century buildings constructed from ashlar, featuring alternating pink sandstone voussoirs and polished marble colonnettes. They stand two storeys tall and have three gables, each adorned with blind triple arcades. The first floor includes three pairs of pointed sash windows, each pair topped with pointed relieving arches.
On the ground floor, there is a central segment-headed archway with elaborate cast iron ornamental gates, flanked by oblong windows. These are further flanked by pointed arched doorways that feature plate cusping and doors with six elaborately moulded panels. The buildings showcase a wealth of high-quality ornamental carving that is rarely repeated, including six keystones with masks, sculpted spandrels above the archway and first-floor windows, Romanesque capitals on the colonnettes, and bands of foliage around the voussoirs of the doors and archway, as well as beneath the first-floor sills.
