Description
Erected in 1870, Skeoch Hill monument commemorates a conventicle, a secret religious gathering. The monument is an obelisk raised on a battered square base, all supported by a stepped plinth and capped with a Communion cup. Constructed from granite, it bears an inscription detailing how, in the summer of 1678, a large number of Covenanters met on the site to worship God. It is recorded that approximately 3000 communicants celebrated the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper, and adjacent stones were used as the communion table. Accounts of the monument and its inscription, including a photograph, have been recorded in local guides. Details about the monument’s construction and its location appeared in a historical survey of Galloway in 1878.
