Description
Caerlaverock Parish Church, dated 1781, is a T-plan church that was re-roofed and renovated in 1894, during which a small piended porch was added to the east and west gables by architect James Barbour of Dumfries. The church is constructed of coursed and squared red rubble with ashlar dressings. It features keystoned round-headed windows, and the 4-bay long south wall has wide outer bays. The north gable has a door with a consoled pediment and an oculus above, while the other gables were originally identical. The church also has a ball-finialed apex birdcage belfry and a lean-to in the re-entrant angle. The roof is covered with graded slates and red ridge tiles, and the interior is galleried.
The churchyard is L-shaped with rubble-built walls and has ball-finialed square red ashlar gate-piers to the south. It includes a gabled former hearse house and features several notable 17th to 19th century stone monuments, including the grave of Robert Paterson, who inspired Sir Walter Scott's "Old Mortality."
