Description
Conheath Private Chapel is a private chapel with a crypt, which was started by architect James A Morris of Ayr around 1909 and completed around 1928 to the design of Sir Robert Lorimer. The chapel has a T-plan and is constructed from stugged and snecked red ashlar with polished dressings. The west gable features a two-leaf oak door with a roll-moulded depressed ogee head and upper jambs, along with scrolled skewputts. At the east gable, V-channelled clasping pilasters rise above the eaves, and there is a round-headed east window with an uncarved key-stone and impost blocks, topped with an apex cross finial. The west end of the south wall has a buttress and two windows. A porch or transept is located against the north wall, which has a west-facing door with partially roll-moulded jambs that extend to an ogee lintel, along with a wall head stack at the east and steps leading down to the crypt. The chapel is topped with slate roofs.
Inside, the chapel features red ashlar walls, a stone-flagged floor, and boarded ceilings. The leaded east window is notable, and the chapel includes a wide, segmental-arched screen leading to the transept and at the west door, the former of which has wooden rails.
