Description

Dated 1905 and built for James Brown of Knockbrex. Small

rectangular rubble built chapel in rugged castellated

style with Arts and Crafts simplicity. Square tower with entrance porch to centre of W side.

W elevation with large round-headed windows flanking taller

projecting buttressed tower, round-arched doorway with mock

portcullis feature. E elevation with 3 large round headed

windows, all with small-pane leaded glazing in bronze frames. Projecting

embattled parapet supported on corbels, to NE angle corbelled

round turret/bartizan.

INTERIOR: unusual with neo- Jacobean flavour; exposed roof

beams, oak wainscot panelling with heavily pointed

exposed mannered random rubble walling above. Flanking

windows and panelled door, timber engaged columns with

foliate capitals support timber archivolt with carved

keystone. Large chimneypiece to N wall in rough rubble with

castellated lintel and round-arched fireplace.

Rubble boundary wall with coping, to W timber lych gate with

red ceramic tiled roof. Some tombstones to churchyard

including bronze plaque to James Brown of Knockbrex.
