Description
The Memorial Chapel and Burial-Ground at Kirkandrews was built in 1905 for James Brown of Knockbrex. This small, rectangular chapel is constructed from rubble in a rugged castellated style, featuring a simple Arts and Crafts design. It has a square tower with an entrance porch located at the center of the west side. The west elevation includes large round-headed windows that flank a taller, projecting buttressed tower, which has a round-arched doorway adorned with a mock portcullis feature. The east elevation also features three large round-headed windows, all fitted with small-pane leaded glazing in bronze frames. The chapel is topped with a projecting embattled parapet supported by corbels, and at the northeast angle, there is a corbelled round turret or bartizan.
Inside, the chapel has an unusual neo-Jacobean style, with exposed roof beams and oak wainscot paneling. Above the paneling, there is heavily pointed exposed random rubble walling. The flanking windows and a panelled door are complemented by timber engaged columns with foliate capitals that support a timber archivolt featuring a carved keystone. A large chimneypiece on the north wall is made of rough rubble and has a castellated lintel with a round-arched fireplace.
Surrounding the chapel is a rubble boundary wall with coping. To the west, there is a timber lych gate topped with a red ceramic tiled roof. The churchyard contains some tombstones, including a bronze plaque dedicated to James Brown of Knockbrex.
