Description
Chapel Farmhouse and Steading, built around 1830, is a courtyard steading with the farmhouse located at the west end of the south range. The structure is constructed from rubble with ashlar dressings, painted, and has a roof made of graded slates.
The farmhouse was originally a single-storey, three-bay cottage that was enlarged, likely by Charles Howitt around 1860. This enlargement included the addition of a south wing against the westernmost bay, a porch in the re-entrant angle, and the walls were heightened with saw-toothed skews. It features sash windows with lying pane glazing and end stacks.
The steading includes a tall north range that houses a barn, a cartshed, and a three-bay stable with glazed loft openings. The other ranges are all single-storey; the west and south ranges are adjacent to the house, with a haybarn built against the west wall of the former and a cart opening at the east end of the latter. The east range has most of its openings blocked. There is also a small detached shed within the courtyard next to the house, and the courtyard itself is cobbled.
