Description
Dalveen is a large two-storey farmhouse built in 1836, designed in the style of William Burn. It features a courtyard steading to the rear (north) and a tall free-standing barn beyond. The farmhouse underwent minor alterations in 1860 and later.
The farmhouse is constructed of coursed stugged ashlar and has crow-stepped gables and wall-head dormers. It includes two parallel, lower asymmetrical rear wings surrounding a cobbled court. The south elevation has three bays, with an advanced wide gable on the left that includes a porch projecting from the re-entrant angle. The wide doorway has moulded reveals, with a small window above it. The ground floor features bipartite windows in the outer bays (inserted) and in a recessed lower bay on the left, which incorporates an armorial panel in the west gable. The windows are small-paned sash. The building has wall-head, end, and axial stacks, mostly with paired corniced flues, and is roofed with graded slates.
The steading consists of three single-storey ranges arranged in a U-plan, with a taller north range that has a loft. There is a detached range to the south, with courtyard entrances on either side. The steading is made of stugged, squared, and snecked rubble with ashlar dressings. The north range features two cartways and a series of loft openings on either long wall, along with an iron forestair leading to the east gable. The east range, possibly a byre, has slit ventilators and roof lights. The courtyard is cobbled, with a central midden enclosed by low walls and kennels at the west end. The barn has masonry piers at each corner and a central buttress on each long wall, with intermediate cast-iron columns, and is boarded below the eaves in the gable heads. The barn is also roofed mostly with graded slates.
