Description

Coshogle in Durisdeer is a single-storey, three-bay farmhouse and large courtyard steading, likely designed by architect Walter Newall around 1830. The house was raised to two storeys in the second half of the 19th century and is situated above a steep bank at the southwest corner of the steading. It is constructed of whin rubble with contrasting ashlar dressings, featuring chamfered reveals at the ground level. The south elevation includes a central gabled porch, which may have been added when the house was raised, along with sash windows that have plate glass on the ground floor and 12-pane glazing on the first floor. The roof has saw-toothed skews and corniced end stacks. A wide piended rear wing has a west-facing bipartite window.

The steading, entered at the northwest corner between corniced square gatepiers, is built of whitewashed rubble with ashlar dressings. The tall east range includes a barn that returns four bays along the north range, featuring square loft doorways and glazed and boarded loft windows. There is a north-facing swept-roofed rear banked cart entrance to the loft, while the remainder of the north range is lower and has a modern roof. Slit ventilators are located at the north end of the east range. The low south and west ranges are each linked to the house, with a cartshed in the former and coped axial and end stacks in the latter.

Most of the roofs are covered with graded slates, with piended roofs over the steading. Axial roof ventilators are present in the east and south ranges, with those in the former being enlarged. The courtyard is partly cobbled and features a central midden.
