Description

Crairiehill is a courtyard steading designed by architect Walter Newall around 1829. It consists of three ranges surrounding a courtyard, with a detached farmhouse at the south end that completes the enclosure. The buildings are constructed from rubble with ashlar dressings and are whitewashed, featuring roofs mostly covered with graded slates.

The steading includes a tall detached east range, which has a three-bay stable at the north end, a cartshed with blocked openings, and a barn at the south end that features a tall doorway and slit ventilators. There is also a low single-bay wing facing the courtyard, with boarded and glazed loft openings, roof-lights, and three large modern axial ventilators. A large modern shed is attached to the east side of this range. The other ranges are single-storey and include louvered and glazed roof ventilators. The south end of the west range has been converted into a garage with a corrugated roof.

The farmhouse was originally a single-storey, three-bay cottage with a central door and wings facing the courtyard. It was altered and enlarged by Charles Howitt around 1867, which included the addition of a full-height gabled wing against the eastmost bay of the south elevation, a central porch, and a wall-head dormer over the remaining bay. The wings were also modified, featuring bull-faced dressings and saw-toothed skews, along with corniced end and ridge stacks.
