Chimney Stack, Waulk Mill, Tarff

Waulk Mill in Tarff was built in 1821 by R W T Milroy and enlarged by W T in 1835. The mill features brick weaving sheds constructed in 1910, with further enlargement in 1917. As of 1990, the building is in poor condition.

The mill building has an 8-bay frontage, is two storeys high with an attic, and is constructed of packed rubble with squared granite quoins and margins. On the left side, there is a large granite margined slate-hung dormer that was originally an attic loading door but has since been glazed as a window. The building has single light windows with a 12-pane glazing pattern, featuring sash and case windows on the ground floor and fixed windows above. The roof is made of corrugated asbestos and includes skylights.

Inside, there is an off-centre internal underfloor wheelpit made from natural rock, with rubble forming the upper parts. A massive, roughly cut hexagonal timber axle is present on site, although not in its original position, along with a water wheel that was originally a large overshot wheel but has since been removed. Timber uprights support the floor joists, and some pulleys and drive shafts are still intact.

The weaving sheds consist of five brick-built asymmetric-gabled structures, with the northern shed being a later addition from 1917, while the others date back to 1910. The south-facing pitches are slated, while the north-facing ones are glazed. A tall, corniced brick chimney features a decorative band.

Inside the weaving sheds, there are four aisles with seven bays, supported by timber uprights that hold metal and timber beams, with most line-shafting still in place. An office is located at the northwest angle. There is also a detached boiler house with a tall octagonal brick stack to the south. The chimney is made of polychrome bricks, tapered and banded at the top.
