47 Castle Street, Dumfries

45 Castle Street in Dumfries is a terrace building, likely designed by Robert Burn. Number 41 was constructed by 1819, while the rest of the terrace was probably built in the 1820s. The buildings are two storeys high with attics and railed basements. They are made of droved ashlar, which is painted except for No 41. Each house features pilastered doorpieces, round-arched doorways, and recessed panelled doors with decorative fanlights.

The houses are arranged in three bays with the door on the left, except for No 47, which has five bays and a central door. They have sash windows, mostly with a 12-pane glazing pattern. Architectural details include band courses between the floors, a string course at the ground floor cill level, a cornice, a blocking course, straight skews, three canted dormers, end stacks, and a slate roof. The north gable has a pediment and a full-length cast-iron balcony at ground level, supported by decorative stanchions and featuring a circular stair leading to the garden. Above, there is a rank of nine diamond flues.

The rear elevation of No 47 includes an acid-etched round-headed stair window and a two-bay wall-head gable. The interiors boast notable features such as cornice plasterwork, woodwork, chimney pieces, and cantilevered stairs. There are walled gardens at the rear and to the north.
