Description

Hetland House Hotel is a building constructed between 1925 and 1927, which incorporates an earlier two-storey bow-fronted house from 1868. The exterior is harled with ashlar margins and rusticated quoins, featuring small-paned sash windows throughout. The building served as a seminary for a period, and in 1965, a large wing was added to the west, designed by Sutherland Dickie and Copeland, constructed of exposed brickwork.

The original house has a rectangular plan with a three-bay south elevation that includes a central door and shallow outer bows. Around 1925, full-width piended outer bays were added, along with a T-plan wing to the northeast. The main entrance on the east elevation features a shallow bow that breaks through the eaves near the center, with a pedimented doorway alongside and a series of flat-roofed dormers. There is a single central dormer on the south side, with stacks arranged symmetrically, including two that are transversely set below the ridge, all topped with cornices and covered by slated roofs.

Inside, most of the features date from 1925 to 1927 and include extensive high-quality timber panelling, chimneypieces, and a main staircase, along with good cornice plasterwork. The modern wing contains a chapel and gymnasium.
