Description
The stables at Southwick House, likely designed by Peddie and Kinnear in 1885, consist of three two-storey granite buildings arranged in a U-shape around a courtyard, with a pend entrance on the east side. The courtyard elevations, as well as the entire east range, feature bull-faced broached granite walling with monolithic margins, while the rest of the structure is built from coursed rubble. The roofs are covered with slate.
The east range has a symmetrical elevation with a central pend, an advanced gabled center, and end bays. The west elevation, which originally had three cart arches at ground level, has been partly blocked and now includes domestic windows and doors due to its conversion for residential use. The pend features bull-faced and broached granite voussoirs, polished granite bands, and a timber-lined soffit. Above the pend is a timber and cast-iron clock housed in a fleche.
The north range contains stables on the east side, featuring three stalls with a hay loft above and feed chutes, while the west end includes a barn.
The west range originally served as coach houses but was converted to garages in the early 20th century. It features a full-width glazed canopy supported by cast-iron columns with timber and cast-iron brackets, along with decorative timber barge-boards.
