Description
Longwood Cottage is a late 18th or early 19th century cottage, likely built within the first half of the 19th century, with a later rear wing and a detached tall block to the southeast that includes a glass house. The ranges are not contemporary but are all probably from the first half of the 19th century.
The cottage is single-storey and three bays, with a gable attic light centrally positioned below an end stack. It is built of rubble stone, with squared rubble to the west front, and has ashlar dressings. A distinctive eaves/lintel band runs along the front elevation. The west-facing front door is panelled and features a fanlight above. The windows are small-paned sashes.
The tall block, likely dating from around 1840, is two storeys high and gabled. It is built of snecked and squared rubble with ashlar dressings and chamfered reveals. A cantilevered stone forestair with an iron handrail runs along the long north wall. The block also has small-paned sash windows, wall-head and axial stacks, and a broad-eaved roof. A full-length glass house is situated along the south wall, its roof abutting the tall block below the main eaves level. A detached glass house is located to the east.
