Description
The outbuilding with glass house at Longwood Cottage comprises a range of structures likely built during the first half of the 19th century. The main building is a single-story, three-bay cottage with an attic space accessed by a central dormer light below the end stack. It has a projecting L-shaped rear wing and a detached, taller block to the southeast with a full-length glass house attached. All buildings are roofed with slate.
The cottage itself is probably from the early 19th century. It’s constructed of rubble stone, with squared rubble on the western front elevation, and has ashlar dressings. The plan is deep, with a panelled front door facing west, featuring a fanlight above, and a continuous band marking the eaves and lintel. Small-paned sash windows are present throughout.
The taller block, likely dating to around 1840, is built of snecked and squared rubble with ashlar dressings and chamfered reveals. It is two stories high with gabled ends and a cantilevered stone forestair on the long north wall, featuring an iron handrail. It has small-paned sash windows, wall-head stacks, and axial stacks, along with a broadly eaved roof.
The glass house runs the full length of the south wall of the taller block and its roof aligns with the block below the main eaves level. A separate, detached glass house is located to the east.
