Description
Broomholm House is a two-story, three-bay classical house dating to 1749. It has a steeply pedimented central bay and recessed single-story flanking wings, with a parallel two-story rear range connected to the main house by a narrow link. The house is constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings and chamfered margins. The south wall features a central door within a lugged architrave, adorned with a pulvinated frieze and pediment. The windows are plate glass sashes. A band runs along the eaves and lintel, supporting a cornice. A keystoned oculus is set within the pediment. The roof is covered with uniform slates, and the gables have straight skews, with margined and corniced end stacks, including a small stack above the pediment. The wings were altered in the 19th century and now incorporate enlarged single windows. The rear range has been raised and features altered openings, a door, and small-paned windows on its north wall. A date is inscribed in the door pediment, along with the initials “M. M(axwell)”. The first floor window cills may have been lowered at some point. The house was formerly the home of John Maxwell, author of "Essay upon Tune". It was built on the site of an earlier tower. Two square gate piers of ashlar, with shaped caps and ball finials decorated with swags, stand to the south, accompanied by an iron gate with plain vertical rails and ball knobs.
