Description

The gate piers and walls at Dunmore, located on Harbour Road in Wigtown, date from around 1845 and were converted into a house in 1914, with further additions and alterations made in 1947. The structure is a tall single-storey, five-bay house with a rectangular plan, featuring lower single-storey pavilions that were originally school wings. It is constructed of whinstone rubble with red sandstone ashlar dressings, including a base and eaves course, and has droved and rusticated quoins and rybats. The principal windows are adorned with hoodmoulds, and the end gables are white painted and harled. At the center, there is a blockish tripartite ashlar porch with a modern door that replaced a former window, flanked by windows. Above and behind the porch, there are two small windows under the eaves. Each side of the house features two tall windows, with the left side having a former door. The pavilion bays added in 1947 include timber garage doors with glazed panels, and the left bay also has a pedestrian door. On the left return, there are two small hoodmoulded windows, one of which is blocked. The right return features a conservatory at the rear.

The rear of the building is made of painted rubble with ashlar dressings, and the conservatory is located to the left. The windows are sash and case with plate glass glazing, and the roof is covered with concrete tiles. There are small end stacks and cast-iron rainwater goods.

The gates, gatepiers, and boundary walls include wrought-iron and cast-iron arrowhead gates made by Anderson Foundry in Bladnoch. There are two pairs of plain, tall red sandstone ashlar pedestrian gatepiers, each featuring a horizontal overthrow, blocking course, and a tablet; one tablet is incised with "Dunmore," while the other is dated 1850. The boundary walls are made of rubble whinstone, with ashlar coping, heavily pointed in places, and are arranged in a quadrant form by the driveway, connecting to the pavilion bays.
