Description
Castle Clanyard is a fragmentary ruin of a castle, constructed from rubble. The remains primarily consist of a section of the west wall, containing several openings. The date of its original construction is unknown, although it was described as "something ruinous" in 1684. Castle Clanyard served as the residence of a branch of the Gordons of Kenmure family. Historical sources detail the castle's existence in the 19th century, with accounts appearing in Groome's Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland, Harper's Rambles in Galloway, and M'Kerlie’s History of the lands and their owners in Galloway. The New Statistical Account also references the site. The Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) Inventory of Wigtown provides further details.
