Description

Hayknowes Farm is a late 18th to early 19th century farmhouse, partially constructed using re-used stonework and buckle-quoins from the old Newbie House, which was built or enlarged in 1657, possibly by John Mylne, the King's master mason. The farmhouse features a courtyard steading to the north and is constructed of whitewashed rubble with ashlar dressings, with roofs that are mainly slated.

The house faces south and has been altered to close off the courtyard at the south side. It is two storeys high with five bays, where the two left bays are an addition. The main three-bay range has re-used buckle-quoins at the front angles that reach a height of about 7 feet. There is a central gabled porch that may date from the mid-19th century, with bipartite windows on the ground floor either side that are likely from the late 19th century. The house has end stacks and a roof that sweeps over a full-length lean-to, featuring a broken roll-moulded stone that has been re-used as a window lintel. A whalebone arch is present to the south, in the garden.

The steading includes a pend in the range adjoining the west gable of the house and a forestair. There are tall ranges to the west and east, with the eastern range having an almost blank wall facing the roadside and a modern corrugated roof. The northern ranges feature one angle that is chamfered and have rooflight ventilators.
