Description
Kendoon North Dam, part of the Galloway Hydroelectric Power Scheme, was designed by James Williamson with consulting engineers Sir Alexander Gibb and Merz and McLellan in 1936. It features a long, shallow V-section concrete arch and gravity dam, with a single control tower located to the north. An elevated roadway runs along the crest of the dam, supported by piers over a fixed spillway to the south, which includes a stepped eaves course to the left. The roadway has a concrete parapet, and some larger piers act as buttresses on the downstream eastern face. The control tower spans a walkway to the south and has chamfered upper corners, with a tall narrow round-headed opening at the base and a single rounded-headed window above. The doorway has a metal covering added in 2009. Beneath the dam, at its eastern base, there is a small valve-house made of reinforced concrete.
