Description
Kendoon Power Station is a 1934 Classical Modern power station designed by consulting engineer Sir Alexander Gibb and electrical engineers Merz and McLellan. The building has a symmetrical 10-bay, 2-storey rectangular plan and features lower terminal bays on the south side. It is constructed of painted reinforced concrete and is characterized by full-height pilasters and a recessed parapet. The entrance has a slightly advanced door surround with a large vehicular opening and a steel shutter, with the inscription above reading: THE GALLOWAY WATER POWER SCHEME, KENDOON POWER STATION, 1934. The windows are large, full-height, rectangular multi-pane designs, and the lower block has regular fenestration with pedestrian doors at the ground floor.
The windows have multi-pane glazing set in metal frames, and the building has a flat platform roof behind the parapet, which includes integrated cast-iron rainwater goods.
Inside, the power station features a plain interior with a large roller crane on steel girders supported by corniced concrete piers and engineered steel roof trusses.
Additionally, there is a valve-house that is a 4-bay, single-storey rectangular-plan structure made of painted concrete. It has a recessed deep base course and eaves course, with large multi-pane rectangular windows, bi-partite in the center.
