Description
These outbuildings belong to Fairyknowe House, a villa likely designed by Alexander Johnstone in the earlier 19th century. The house is a single-story, three-bay structure with a raised basement. The outbuildings are located to the north.
The main house is constructed of rubble with ashlar margins. The central doorway has been altered, with renewed steps and the addition of a columned doorpiece, likely in the 1920s or 1930s. The ground floor features square windows, while the basement windows have a horizontal emphasis with lying panes and a latticed casement window below the staircase; other windows are sash windows. The house has base and eaves courses, and a blocked cornice on all elevations. End stacks sit on ramped bases, and the roof is piended, platformed, and slated with leaded glazing, incorporating two Velux lights to the front and rear. The side and rear elevations display a variety of glazing patterns, predominantly using timber sash and case windows. A central stair window is located at the rear.
The outbuildings comprise a tall, rectangular barn built against a bank to the east, featuring a symmetrical long west wall with a large central arch, and a recessed gabled range to the north containing a dovecot. Low kennels are situated beyond. These are also rubble-built with ashlar dressings and slate roofs. The original front steps to the house are now located in the garden, and column bases found on site may be remnants of an earlier doorpiece. Records of Alexander Johnstone’s drawings are held by the National Monuments Record of Scotland.
