Description
Fairyknowe House is an early 19th-century villa, likely designed by Alexander Johnstone, accompanied by associated outbuildings to the north. The house is a single-storey structure with a raised basement and comprises three bays. It is constructed of rubble with ashlar margins. The central door was renewed in the 1920s or 1930s, accompanied by the addition of a columned doorpiece; the ground floor windows are square, while those in the basement have a horizontal emphasis with lying panes and a latticed casement window below the stair. Other basement windows are sash windows. The house features base and eaves courses, and a blocked cornice to all elevations. End stacks sit on ramped bases, and the roof is piended and platformed, covered in slate and lead, with two Velux lights to the front and rear. The flank and rear elevations feature varied glazing patterns, mostly in timber sash and case windows. A central stair window is visible on the rear elevation.
The outbuildings include a tall, rectangular barn built against a bank to the east, with a symmetrical long west wall featuring a large central arch, and a recessed gabled range to the north incorporating a dovecot and low kennels beyond. All outbuildings are rubble-built with ashlar dressings and have slate roofs. The original front steps are now located in the garden, and column bases on the site may be remnants of an earlier doorpiece. Records indicate plans by Alexander Johnstone are held.
