Description
Spottes Hall is a two-storey and basement double-pile house built around 1784 to 1789, with significant additions made in 1873 and 1887. The house features a projecting entrance bay to the north and a later porch. The lower two-storey wings added in 1873 have further extensions to the west from 1887.
The southeast elevation is constructed of squared ashlar with pinnings, polished margins, and a base course. All openings are adorned with moulded architraves, and the first-floor windows are corniced sash and case with a 12-pane glazing pattern. This elevation has five bays and includes an elegant flight of steps leading to a central architraved door, which is above the basement. The left two bays at ground level feature a 19th-century corniced canted window with plate glass sashes. A moulded eaves cornice with a blocking course supports the roof.
The northeast elevation is made of rubble with smooth rusticated quoins and is detailed similarly to the southeast. It has a full-height advanced bay with a single-storey porch that shelters steps over the basement. The mid-19th-century porch includes paired pilasters, a cornice, and a blocking course, with an off-centre doorway framed by a timber architrave. The lower two-storey and basement flanking wings are constructed of coursed ashlar with polished red sandstone dressings and quoins. The eastern wing features tripartite windows on both elevations and a round-headed dormer above, while the western wing includes a top-lit billiard room. Additional domestic offices are located in rough rubble to the west.
The house is topped with slate roofs and has corniced axial stacks with 19th-century octagonal cans.
