Description
The buildings known as the Barn and Former Bacon Factory at North Howes date from the 18th and 19th centuries and have undergone some alterations. They are located on the north and south sides of a steading courtyard and were likely constructed in the second half of the 18th century. Both structures are built from rubble with ashlar dressings, and their roofs are primarily slated.
The barn, which is situated beside the driveway, has a rectangular plan and features large archways on each long wall, although the southern archway is blocked. There are two tiers of narrow slit ventilators, most of which are also blocked, and some alterations have been made to the courtyard area. The skews of the barn are adorned with simple moulded skewputts.
The bacon factory has a rectangular plan and includes a large full-height opening facing the courtyard. Inside, the walls have square recesses designed for timbers that were used to suspend bacon.
