Description

The Trades Hall, located at 16 and 17 Queensberry Square in Dumfries, is a freestanding building designed by Thomas Boyd in 1804. This Classical structure features a rectangular plan and stands three storeys tall. The ground floor was originally open with arcades, which were filled in 1847 and now accommodate shops. The exterior is finished in painted ashlar, with droved stone above the ground level and decorative architraves.

The principal (north) elevation has five bays, with the inner three bays being more prominent and topped with a pediment that displays the date in the tympanum. The main doorway is centrally located, and the first-floor windows are corniced, with the central window featuring a consoled pediment. The sash windows have a 12-pane glazing pattern on the first floor, while most other windows have had their glazing bars removed. The west flank has three bays, with a central tripartite window that is corniced and has columned mullions at the first floor. The roof is piended and platformed, made of slate and lead, with flues gathered into a large central stack.

Inside, the Trades Hall features some decorative cornice plasterwork, panelled doors within architraves, and a well-preserved original chimneypiece adorned with husked garlands.
