Description

These former stables, dating to 1774, consist of two rectangular ranges arranged around a cobbled courtyard. The principal range, now largely used for domestic purposes, is two storeys high. It was built of brick with some ashlar dressings, all currently painted, with the south gable finished in harling. The building features a central, pedimented bay along each long wall. There are some blocked and altered openings, with bays arranged irregularly. A porch is situated at the south end of the west wall, and some windows are located above the eaves. Four doors give access to the courtyard, three retaining fanlights. Brick nogging is present at the eaves, and the windows are mostly small-paned sashes. Blocked oculi are in each pediment; these may have originally been openings for a pend below. Two modern apex stacks are present, along with a stack on a projecting chimney breast at the south end. The roof is slate, with a piended north end.

The secondary range is likely of a similar date and is one storey high. It is built of painted rubble with some brick dressings. It contains a garage door and three 12-pane sash windows facing the courtyard. A door on the north wall incorporates the inner light of a Venetian window. The roof is piended and slate.

Low quadrant walls enclose the courtyard to the north and south, and cut-down square gatepiers with V-channelled details mark the south boundary. Brick structures of this size and date are uncommon in the area. Cavens House itself is not included in the listing.
