Description

St Kennera Church, built in 1828 by builder Paul McClure, is a rectangular Gothic hall church located on Main Street in Kirkinner. It features a tower on the west side and a small vestry on the east gable. The church is constructed with rubble walling and polished red sandstone dressings. Its three-bay side walls are buttressed and have pointed-arch perpendicular traceried windows with lozenge glazing. The squat tower has two uneven stages, marked by angle buttresses and string courses, with a square-headed chamfered door at the ground level, blind lancets above, and a louvred belfry topped with an embattled parapet.

Inside, the church has a panel-fronted gallery on three sides, supported by four small cast-iron columns and two larger timber columns. The pulpit is octagonal and panelled, resembling a wine-glass, and is set on a raised podium with barley sugar twist balusters on the stairs. A delicate plaster ceiling rose adds to the interior's charm.

Within the church, there is an ancient stone Celtic cross. The churchyard, enclosed by rubble walls, contains many notable 18th century gravestones.

In the southeast corner of the churchyard stands the Van Agnew Mausoleum, an outstanding 18th century classical mausoleum that is currently in a ruinous condition. It is rectangular in plan and constructed of ashlar, featuring Ionic pilasters, keystoned arches, niches, and carved armorials.
