Description

The Town Hall on St Mary Street in Kirkcudbright was built in 1878 by Kinnear and Peddie, with Walter Wallace as the builder. This two-storey building features a three-bay elevation facing St Mary's Street and a seven-bay elevation towards Church Place. The exterior is made of polished red sandstone, with rock-faced, rusticated piers flanking the entrance and at the corners. The main entrance has a wide door framed by panelled pilasters and pairs of consoles that support a balcony above, which leads to a first-floor Venetian window. The first-floor bays are divided by paired pilasters, and the outer windows have semi-circular heads, with two similar return bays. A deep frieze is inscribed with "Library, Town Hall, Museum, Reading Room," topped by a deep modillion cornice and a raised roof light. The Church Place elevation has five additional bays constructed from squared granite with red sandstone dressings, featuring five windows and a door on the ground floor, and five semi-circular headed windows with apron panels on the first floor, along with a simple cornice. The building has wall-head stacks and a piended slate roof.
