Description

Langshawbush is a late 19th-century villa accompanied by a coach house and kennels, situated near Moffat. The main villa is a two-storey structure with a three-storey square entrance tower at its northwest corner. The exterior walls are constructed from roughly coursed and squared whinstone, enhanced by contrasting ashlar dressings and raised quoins. First-floor windows are largely topped with gabled dormer heads. The tower features a doorway facing north, set within a shallow, castellated porch with shouldering details. A corbelled and crenellated parapet tops the tower, and an engaged angle turret extends upwards as a cap house, finished with a leaded, bell-cast roof and a finial.

The remaining north-facing bays are divided by a prominent chimney breast. The east and south gables are treated similarly, with the main roof extending over a two-storey canted window in the right gable. The eaves are supported by brackets, and the roof is topped with spike finials and graded slates. The west wall is plain, constructed of whinstone, indicating a former wing that once adjoined.

The coach house and kennels to the southwest mirror the detailing of the main villa. A pair of good corniced, square panelled gatepiers mark the entrance to the north, with cast-iron gates. Simpler piers and a pedestrian gate are located to the south. Two sundials are present in the garden, one with a facet-headed design, both now situated on modern bases.
