Description
Killantringan Lighthouse, designed by engineer D A Stevenson in 1900, features a tapering four-stage circular-plan lighthouse alongside a rectangular-plan keeper's house that is single and two-storey with five bays. The exterior is finished with harl and sandstone ashlar dressings, including a base course, eaves course, advanced quoins, and long and short surrounds to openings.
The lighthouse has a timber entrance door on the northwest side and an inscription within a flat pediment stating "1900 erected by the commissioners of northern lighthouses D A Stevenson engineer." It has single windows at the second and third stages on the northwest and southeast elevations, a metal circular handrail, and a circular light casing. There is an adjoining flat-roofed building to the southwest, which has three single windows on the southeast and southwest elevations, and a timber door on the northeast elevation.
The keeper's cottage features an advanced gabled timber entrance porch with foliate capitals and decorative timber bargeboarding. It has a two-leaf timber door with the inscription "In Salutem Omnium 1900" within the pediment, and a single window aligned at the first floor. The flanking bays have regular fenestration, with single windows at ground level in the single-storey bays to the outer left and right.
On the northwest (rear) elevation, there is a single window at ground level in the centre and a pair of single windows aligned at the first floor, with regular fenestration in the flanking bays. The outer left and right have two single windows in single-storey bays, and a timber and glass door replaces a single window on the outer right. A lean-to is located to the left.
The northeast elevation includes a single window and an entrance to the right, while the southwest elevation has two single windows to the left. The keeper's cottage features four-pane timber sash and case windows, a flat roof, corniced wallhead stacks, and circular cans, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interior was not seen in 1997. Additional features on the site include a foghorn located to the southwest of the lighthouse, various flat-roofed outbuildings, coped painted rubble boundary walls, square-plan gatepiers with pyramidal caps, and decorative ironwork on the timber porch.
