Description
The Agnew Monument, dated 1850, is a tower monument positioned on the summit of Tor of Craigoch, making it a prominent landmark. Constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings, the monument comprises four stages and a square plan. Diagonal buttresses rise to midway through the third stage, and a quoin strip defines the edges above. A stepped, coped course marks the transition between the first and second stages, while a band course sits between the third and fourth. Raised margins frame blinded, narrow lights, with a window opening on each face at the second, third, and fourth stages. An ashlar panel on the south face displays the Agnew crest and an inscription reading "Erected by a few of the inhabitants of this district and other friends in memory of the late Sir Andrew Agnew of Lochnaw... 1850". A similarly moulded ashlar panel on the north face bears an inscription that is now significantly weathered. The monument is topped with a corbelled crenellated parapet, with ridged coping that steps down at the centre of each face. The tower serves as a monument to Sir Andrew Agnew of Lochnaw (1793 - 1849), with the north-facing panel commemorating his life and achievements.
