Description
Kirkmichael House is a small country house that underwent alterations and enlargement in the second half of the 19th century. The original core of the house likely dates to 1835, evidenced by a datestone. Originally an L-shaped building, it was modified to include a raised former south gable and adjoining walls, topped with a corbelled parapet, creating a "tower house" appearance. A symmetrical three-bay east front was added to the existing structure. There is also a long, single-storey rear wing to the west. The house is constructed of whin rubble stone with contrasting red ashlar dressings.
The east elevation features three piended bays, each topped with a finial. A narrow inner bay projects forward and contains a doorway set within a corniced projection. The ground floor has bipartites with hood moulds, and all windows are sash windows with small panes of glass. An eaves course runs along the top of the elevation, and ashlar stacks, some with diamond flues, are present. The north elevation is roughly symmetrical with additions on either side of the original inner gable. The rear wing has a gable at its south end and incorporates a modern verandah. Axial stacks with diamond flues are evident. All roofs are slated.
The original L-shaped house is visible on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1856. The house was formerly known as Jessiefield.
