Description

Kirkmichael Parish Church and burial ground was built in 1814. It is a simple, T-shaped church constructed of rubble with red ashlar dressings. The church has round-headed openings, including four windows along the long east wall and a north-facing entrance with a fanlight featuring intersecting tracery. A small, square porch was added later, situated off-centre on the west gable, alongside a gabled vestry, topped with a belfry in a birdcage style.

The church has a prominent eaves course with a moulded cornice, and a roof covered in graded slates. The main body of the church has a piended roof with apex ventilators.

Inside, the church contains pews with raised and fielded panelled backs, and a gallery on the west wall. A hexagonal pulpit is located on the east wall, featuring a pedimented backboard flanked by two stained-glass windows dating from approximately 1862 depicting "Christ stilling the storm" and "Christ as the good shepherd". A further stained-glass window, dated 1934, depicts “Our Lady flanked by Faith and Hope”.

The irregular-shaped churchyard is enclosed by rubble-built walls with ashlar coping. A gate is situated on the north wall, alongside a stile, with pyramidal caps on the gate piers. Several good stone monuments from the 17th to 19th centuries are present, including a Stewart monument consisting of an urn-finialed Doric shaft on a square base and a Scott family enclosure featuring a Gothic mural monument with arcaded inscription panels.

The church is an ecclesiastical building and remains in use as such. It was possibly designed by John MacCracken of Dumfries, who inspected the previous church and made recommendations.
