Description

Auchencairn House is an 18th century, originally 2-storey, 3-bay house that has been incorporated into the east wing of a larger later house. This wing was extended to 5 bays and refaced around 1860, while a much larger west wing was built in the late 19th century.

The east wing is 2-storey and 5-bay, featuring projecting gabled outer bays, all faced in polished red sandstone from around 1860. The ground floor windows are bi-partite or tripartite sash and case with 2-pane plate glass. The first-floor windows are recessed within two thin roll-moulded architraves, sash and case with a 12-pane glazing pattern. The central bays have a band course above the ground floor, and there is a corbelled parapet at the eaves. The end-bay gables are flanked by square-plan pinnacles topped with pyramidal caps.

The west wing, built around 1875, is an asymmetrical 2-storey and attic house made of polished red ashlar. It features a 3-storey square tower at the southeast angle and an advanced, stepped 2-storey projecting squared bay with a round-arched doorway at the ground level, flanked by Gothic columns. The shouldered doorway has double-leaf panelled doors and an incised semi-circular blind fanlight above.

The south elevation has 4 bays with the southeast tower on the right and a gabled bay on the left, which includes a 3-light square projecting window at the ground level. The two central bays have canted projecting windows at the ground level and single light windows above. To the right, there are two arched lights at the ground level flanking an engaged "column" that supports a canted oriel on the first floor, with a tripartite window above. All projecting windows feature bracketed parapets, and all windows are sash and case with either 2 or 4-pane plate glass.

The east elevation includes the tower on the left with a projecting hexagonal stair turret, and a wide gabled bay on the right featuring three round-arched windows at both the ground and first floors, along with a single round-arched attic light. There are corbel-brackets at the eaves and steeply pitched slate roofs, with tall octagonal stacks topped with decorative ceramic cans shaped like miniature fleche.
