Description

The parish church and burial ground at Lochrutton was built in 1819 on the site of an earlier church, with repairs undertaken in 1889. The church was constructed using coursed granite with rusticated quoins, all painted. It is a simple hall church with three bays, featuring pointed-arch windows with raised margins and small-pane glazing contained within intersecting Y-traceried heads. A projecting porch with a vestry is located to the west. A pointed-arch doorway is situated at the east, flanked by aedicular marble war memorials. At the apex of the east gable sits a pyramidal bellcote constructed of red sandstone and dated 1819; the bell itself dates to 1764. Tile cresting runs along the roof ridge.

The interior includes a panelled screen at the east end creating a narthex. Panel-backed pews are arranged to form a central and side aisle. Modern furnishings include a communion table, font, and pulpit.

The churchyard contains numerous 18th and 19th century tombstones, enclosed by drystone walls and plain cast-iron gates. The church was built to a general design by Walter Newall, with modifications made by Robert Carlish, joiner at Terregles, and Alex Robinson, contractor of Kirk Gunzeon. The building is currently in ecclesiastical use.
