Description

Cummertrees House is a farmhouse dating from around 1800, which incorporates earlier elements and is accompanied by a courtyard steading. The building is constructed from rubble with ashlar dressings, all painted, and features contrasting margins. It has slated roofs.

On the south elevation of the house, there are three unequal bays, with a gabled central porch that has pilastered door margins and shaped skews. The house has sash windows throughout, featuring a 4-pane glazing pattern. The shallow raised quoins are interrupted on the left side where the stonework pattern changes, and there is a relieving arch or blocked archway in the left bay at ground level. The skews are straight and have moulded skewputts, and there are corniced end stacks. The main roofs extend over a full-width rear extension that leads to the courtyard.

The steading consists of two L-plan blocks. The taller block, which is attached to the west gable of the house, includes a three-bay stable in the south range with a central loft door and an altered south elevation. The west range serves as a barn, with the main roof sweeping over a projection to the courtyard that houses a barn door, and there is a square-headed cart opening to the right. The lower block is simpler in design and features a modern car park. The courtyard is cobbled.
