Description

Thomas Boyd of Dumfries, 1790-2; theatre, re-modelled by

C J Phipps of London, 1876; repaired by Colin Morton,

1959-60, after fire damage. Rectangular-plan, original

W gabled elevation remodelled by Phipps, original portico

replaced by full width 2-storey range, one bay in depth

and with clasping pilasters, with 3 large round-arched

doorways, band at impost level; 1st floor central pilastrade; string/band courses; dentilled cornice and piended roof;

long S flank to Queen Street also altered, but with original

rusticated quoins at SE corner. Mainly rendered with ashlar

dressings; all painted. Slate roofs.

Interior: mostly by Morton; decorative iron gallery

front by Phipps survives; stage at E end. Extension to NE.
