Description

The Theatre Royal, located on Shakespeare Street in Dumfries, was originally built between 1790 and 1792 by Thomas Boyd. It was later remodeled in 1876 by C.J. Phipps from London and underwent repairs by Colin Morton from 1959 to 1960 following fire damage. The building has a rectangular plan, with the original west gabled elevation redesigned by Phipps. The original portico was replaced with a full-width, two-storey range that is one bay deep and features clasping pilasters, three large round-arched doorways, and a band at the impost level. The first floor has a central pilastrade, along with string and band courses, a dentilled cornice, and a piended roof. The long south flank facing Queen Street has also been altered but retains the original rusticated quoins at the southeast corner. The exterior is mainly rendered with ashlar dressings and is all painted, topped with slate roofs.

Inside, most of the interior work was done by Morton, but the decorative iron gallery front by Phipps remains. The stage is located at the eastern end of the building, and there is an extension to the northeast.
