Description
Clonhie is a building likely designed by architect Walter Newall around 1830. It features a courtyard steading with a detached single-storey and attic, three-bay farmhouse located to the east. The structure is primarily built from rubble, with ashlar dressings; the farmhouse is constructed of whin rubble with contrasting dressings, while the steading is whitewashed. The roofs are mostly covered with graded slates.
The south elevation of the house has a shallow advanced and gabled inner bay that includes a corniced plain doorpiece, with boarded and glazed two-leaf doors and a tall fanlight above. There is a single window in the gable head, along with two 20th-century gabled bipartite dormers. The house features small-paned sash windows, crow-stepped gables, corniced end stacks, and rear wings.
The steading consists of four ranges surrounding a cobbled courtyard, which can be accessed from either side of the detached east range. The tall west range contains a three-bay stable, a cartshed, and a barn to the north, which has two tiers of slit ventilators. The loft openings are boarded and glazed, and there is a pulley wheel high on the north wall. The other ranges are single-storey. The north range includes rooflight ventilators, while the south range has been lengthened and partly rebuilt in brick, featuring a corrugated roof. The east range has a modern brick addition to the courtyard.
