Description
Castlemilk is a large Scots Baronial mansion designed by architect David Bryce and dated 1865. The building is mostly two to three storeys high and features circular turrets, corbelled bartizans, pedimented dormer heads, crow-stepped gables, and coped stacks. The exterior is constructed of stugged and snecked ashlar with polished dressings and roll-mouldings, topped with finialled slate roofs and conical roofs that include lead figures. A notable feature is the three-storey Castle Fraser-style tower with a castellated porch-cochere on the east side, which fronts a balustraded tall circular turret with a bell-cast cap.
The mansion is surrounded by a courtyard formed by a left-plan Crathes-style south range, which includes a mullioned and transomed turret in the re-entrant angle. A mullioned conservatory on the south side has been remodelled to serve as a dining room. To the northeast, there is an extensive U-plan coach house and offices linked by an archway. A garden balustrade is located to the west of the house.
Inside, the mansion boasts extremely rich and well-executed neo-Jacobean decoration in the halls and principal rooms, featuring extensive oak panelling and intricate ceiling plasterwork. Some sensitive alterations were made in the early 20th century, possibly by Scott Morton, particularly in the morning room. A fine oak staircase with arcaded balustrading and wrought-iron enrichment is accessed through a square-columned screen, and there are marble and oak chimney pieces throughout.
