Description
Beattock Bridge is a road bridge constructed in 1819, with John MacDonald acting as contractor, as recorded by an inscription on the stonework. The bridge was widened to the east in the mid-20th century, but retains its original profile. It features a single, segmental arch rising high above the Evan Water.
The original bridge is built of coursed, squared rubble with ashlar dressings and rusticated voussoirs, the latter continuing as a channelled soffit. It has slightly battered abutments and a band course below the west parapet, which may have been rebuilt. A later addition, built of concrete and faced with red ashlar, replicates the style of the original. The inscription reads: "This Bridge Was Bult (sic.) By/JOHN MACDONALD/ From a Plan By/THOMAS TELFORD/ In The year/1819." The main span is approximately 17 metres in length. The bridge is situated in Beattock Village.
