Description
41 and 43 English Street in Dumfries is a three-storey tenement building with attics, dated 1885, featuring shops on the ground floor. The building has four bays and is constructed of red ashlar. It has sash windows that are architraved on the first floor and margined with a cill band on the second floor. The ground floor was originally designed with Ionic pilasters, a pulvinated frieze, and a modillioned cornice, which includes a pedimented doorpiece at the arched stair door in the second bay, with the date displayed in the tympanum. Two pilasters from the original design remain, although the frieze and architrave are obscured by modern shop fascias. The shop to the right features a central cast-iron column. The building has two modern square dormers and a slate roof.
