17 Broughton Place, Edinburgh

17 Broughton Place is a terraced corner tenement building constructed between 1820 and 1821. It stands four storeys high with a basement and features a six-by-four bay layout, including a bowed bay at the Hart Street corner. The exterior is made of sandstone ashlar, with rustication at the ground level. Notable architectural details include a base course, band courses between the floors, a cill band at the first floor, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course. The entrance is accessed via ashlar steps and plats that overhang the basement.

On the north elevation facing Broughton Place, there are six bays. The entrance features a timber panelled door with a round-arched umbrella astragalled fanlight, set within a columned and tripartite doorway that has a cornice, located to the right of the centre. The windows in the bays are mostly intact, with the penultimate bay on the left side blinded for symmetry at both the ground and upper levels. The fenestration above is regular.

The east elevation facing Hart Street includes a common stair entrance on the outer left, with a timber panelled door and a round-arched fanlight similar to the north elevation, located to the right of the centre. The windows in the bays are also mostly intact, with regular fenestration above.

The building features timber sash and case windows with 12-pane glazing, stacks with terracotta cans, and decorative cast-iron railings. The interior was not seen in 1998.
